The month of March is associated with a beautiful birthstone – Aquamarine. The word aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. So basically – seawater. The name tells the story of its magnificent color. Some call that color “pastel sky blue” or simply “the color of the sea”. Either way what can be more peaceful?

Large aquamarine crystals have been found all over the world, but the largest is said to be found in Brazil in 1980’s. People say it has been more than a meter long but the miners dropped it by accident breaking it in 3 pieces. The largest one of them is preserved and is known as “Dom Pedro Aquamarine”. This exquisite stone weighs 10,363 carats and is 14 inches tall and 4 inches wide.

Aquamarines can be in a range of blues. Darker shades of blue are pretty rare so those aquamarine stones are more expensive. Usually aquamarine is a pastel gemstone, but larger pieces tend to be of a more vivid color than the small ones.

Aquamarine – seawater

Aquamarine is mainly mined in Brazil, but also in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique. Like emerald, this gemstone is actually a variety of a mineral called beryl. Aquamarine grows in large, six-sided crystals that can be up to a foot long, making it a great gem to be cut and polished in larger carats for statement pieces of jewelry.

For centuries, Aquamarine has been a symbol of youth, hope, health and fidelity. The color of aquamarine represents eternal life. This gemstone is said to have a soothing influence on married couples, so it is a great anniversary gift.

It is only logical that a gemstone with the color of seawater is said to protect sailors. The blue or blue-green color of Aquamarine helps with cooling the temper, and making the wearer calm.

In the Middle Ages people believed in a lot of things that today may seem rather strange. One of those beliefs is that by wearing aquamarine a person can be saved from poisoning.
